KGF Peptide Solution supplies sH-Polypeptide-3, a bioengineered Keratinocyte Growth Factor. It is a colorless aqueous solution used at very low levels in skin, hair, lash and nail products.
What Is KGF (sH-Polypeptide-3)?
KGF stands for Keratinocyte Growth Factor. The supplier describes it as a protein that signals skin cells and hair follicles, linked to thicker-looking hair, smoother skin texture, better elasticity and support for hyaluronan and collagen. It is allowed in cosmetics as a skin conditioner in the US, EU, Canada, Australia, Japan and China, according to the supplier.
Key Properties
Skin and hair in one active
Unlike most peptides, KGF is positioned for both face care and hair, lash and nail products.
Low use rate
The KGF concentration is 0.016% (160 mg/kg) and the recommended rate is 0.25%.
Important limitation
Because KGF can promote cell proliferation, the supplier warns against use on skin with serious skin conditions; see the supplier sheet for the exact wording.
Where It Is Used
Typical uses are lash and brow serums, scalp serums, nail strengthening drops, anti-aging serums and gentle care after peels or microdermabrasion. In hair products it pairs with our hair and scalp peptide solution, and in lash serums with Biotinoyl Tripeptide-1 powder. Browse other options in our peptides category.
How to Use
Add to the water phase when cold processing, or during cool-down at 40°C or lower after the emulsion has formed. Mix lightly and avoid high shear. Recommended rate: 0.25%.
Compatibility and Technical Notes
Avoid extremes of pH and alcohol. Keep lash and scalp serums water-based rather than alcohol-based when KGF is included. White specks may settle in the raw material; mix gently before weighing.
Characteristics
INCI: Water, Ammonium Sulfate, sH-Polypeptide-3. CAS: 148348-15-6, 7732-18-5, 7783-20-2. Appearance: colorless aqueous solution, may be speckled with white powder that may settle. Solubility: water soluble. KGF concentration: 0.016% (160 mg/kg) in ammonium sulfate buffer.
Example: Lash and Brow Serum (10 g)
Combine 8.8 g distilled water, 0.5 g glycerin and 0.05 g hydroxyethylcellulose and stir until thickened. Add 0.5 g D-Panthenol 75%, 0.025 g KGF Peptide Solution and 0.1 g preservative. Mix slowly and fill into a mascara-style tube with a fine brush.
Working With Very Small Amounts
For a 10 g lash serum the KGF quantity is only 0.025 g. Prepare a 10% premix in distilled water on the day of use and add 0.25 g of the premix for better accuracy. Mascara-style tubes and airless pumps limit air and finger contact and keep these premium products cleaner during use.
Storage
Keep closed and refrigerated. Confirm the exact storage temperature on the supplier specification sheet.
FAQ
What is the difference between KGF and EGF?
Both are growth factor proteins. EGF is mainly used in face care, while KGF is also used for hair, lash and nail products.
Can KGF go into an alcohol-based scalp tonic?
The supplier advises avoiding alcohols, so a water-based tonic is the better choice.
How much KGF should I use?
The recommended rate is 0.25% of the finished product.
